well if I were the breeders I would think out of the box and try to get new owners as a collective -
I would ask breeders to set a price for unsold horses - Say the breeder wants 30k then he syndicates the horse for that price in 10% shares - - A few well-placed adverts on Teletrack and some mainstream media (obviously aimed at the correct market - ) point potential new buyers to the TBA and RA site where they have a section for syndication buys - Trainers can tender for the right to train the horse and the one that gets the max votes from members of the syndicate gets to train the horse. All rules pertaining to the management of the syndicate must be clear and upfront... I would also think an upfront payment of say R85k per horse for training fees gets added to the purchase price - So the horse costs 115k - so for 12k you have 10% interest in a horse paid for +- 10 months(barring vet bills)
The TBA site and the RA site should be used more to ACTIVELY SELL horses not just to praise owners and advertise upcoming sales.
Just an idea that obviously needs more thought

Makes a lot of sense Hawaii. This method will also protect the owner for 10 months

Agree with Mr H - breeders are the sellers - so they have to find ways to make the product attractive to the buyers - out of the box thinking required in a shrinking market

I usually make a list of what I would be interested in buying - if somebody else would be paying keep :P - this time I did not have the time to even make it to the sales - so the list was made up of what I saw in the catalogue - and the list automatically excludes potential bombs like the Dynastys, Vars, Silvanos ...

On my original list of 22, 2 were withdrawn, so I ended with 20 on the list - of these the top price fetched was the 240k for Lot 53 - a Judpot colt out of a Model Man mare (the cross that produced Along Came Polly); of the rest 3 horses fetched between 100k and 150k; the others (of which 3 were Not Sold) came in below 100k - 3 sold at 15k

Bearing in mind that I did not see the filly and judging by the catalogue page alone, Lot 227 - a Right Approach filly out of a Fort Wood mare, could be a real steal at 15k - the cross produced Halve a Deficit, the full sister Sybil a 3 time winner and a family sprinkled with black type - will be watching this one should she make it to the track one day B)

Far to many horses are breed each year.
The industry will rue the day it turned its back on the small owner.
Sign of the times and financial constraints on most.
Crap/shocking return on investment. (stakes, costs etc)

Sad times

The cost of breeding is really high only to sell your foal for 15k taking a massive loss!! I bought a horse maybe 10 yrs ago for 17k(I think training was 3k basic with my trainer then) - how much have training fees gone up and feed and vet bills and now you sell a horse for 15k ten years later and training fees must be 6k min at most yards

......most those breeders think that they are bringing big favors to the land of milk and honey.....
.....well the milk is sour.....and Honey is now a crack whore in Rosetenville.....

.....the point is that they are so far removed from reality...racing has been on a bitter slide for years and even before the 2nd recession hit ....racing politics and lack of transparency has chased away the middle market..
