Over the Air wrote: Dave are we surprised about the attendance, there was no advertising in the mainstream media. I asked my twenty somethings if they knew about the "royal" meeting, neither had. So thats a big market untapped. So the advertising was to the already converted and you got one or two owners with runners on the day dressing up and that was it. I hope Phumelela organised armed security to cart away the gate takings  These guys are really rank amateurs when it comes to marketing this sport. This sort of epitomizes the effort and return on local racing doesn't it?

Importing ARCHAIC traditions that are not part of SA culture was always doomed to fail ... We are not a nation that lives for Tops And Tails - I wonder who thought up this notion? In my immediate circle I don't know one male friend who has a Top Hat - I bet that if Racing had a "Jeans " only day they would get more people involved... I also know that if my local Pick N Pay in Benoni had advertised that The Princess would be visiting the store between 12 and 3pm there would have been thousands of people in attendance - I have looked through this week's Benoni City Times(Her home town) and there is not a single article about her or this event ... Now if I was running this campaign I would have called the paper and offered(with permission from The Princess) an exclusive interview with her at the event provided they give coverage before and after the happening( this could have been syndicated to all the other Caxton Newspapers in the Greater Gauteng)... but it seems common sense is not that common. Far better to waste 100k on the Time Bomb which is BATTLING to get a 4k pool per bet!!!
