I am sure that there must be a nett loss on buying these Aussie Bred horses.
Can see what the moral of your story reads........local is lekker???
Perhaps the advice you want to give Roy is to buy........Silvanos? They can stay all day and improve with age, it seems.

Any horse from SA going through quaratine for its first Dubai season is very, very difficult. I dont think anyone has any real idea of how bad it really is. It takes an exceptional horse to perform in their first year in Dubai. Harrys Son will be a huge contender next year if left in Dubai/Europe. He has shown enough to warrant him staying there. Tellina ?? Stayers too good overseas.
Aus horses are of the best in the world Les so I dont know where you get your info from bud. Local is better.......

I see where Les is coming from with regard to ROI.................Many Aussie horses perform well but it is a question of relativity..........if you add the +- R400,000 you will spend ongoing + the original cost (at the exchange rate ) of Aussie imports, I would be interested how many recoup their investment?

I find it more strange that the CAPE boys make the Jaunt to Australia, considering all the unraced well bred horses in their own region

What an OPPORTUNITY to even be part of the Dubai World Cup. Fortunately Harry's owners have covered their cost to get him there. Well done Phil , Laff and crew for representing SA
Hopefully our horses can fly directly like their opposition in future , THEN we will see our horses have equal opportunity
Once you are invited to any World Cup race on the day they pay ALL costs to return your horse to any location in the world you choose. I think Harry was going to Hong Kong after Dubai but lets wait and see how he pulls up , I am sure they will make a good decision shortly

Les, the bottom line remains that on average or statistically, the Aus horses do very well here. Also, the cost to bring an Aus horse here is about R200k and not R400k.
As for Harry ' s Son - draw a line through the run. But, he has paid his way and the ride for the Owners has been wonderful. This is what Racing is all about. Just imagine having a horse that can and is accepted to compete against the best in the World - that in itself is the ultimate racing experience. It's about a lot more than balancing the books....its about Passion, about living a dream.
So, WELL DONE to Laff and team !!

Definitely harsh opening post.
Harry did well in his first 2 and based on his form with Ertijaal ran below best in the big 1. Was bit far off pace in a race that was always likely a bit far for him . Thought Was a bold and good move for Laff to take the plunge and didn't do much wrong in my opinion.
As for Aussie breds..no doubt that stats wise they perform very well in SA which is not suprising as they have a bigger pool of breeding to choose from and the type they breed is ideally suited to our type of racing, similar for the Argies . They do cost substantially more, and recent years probably been a lot more wastage than previously as many more come in these days.
