World sports betting have donated R150 000 to the horse care units this last few months

I don't know how many Trainers do what Oscar. All that I can do is what I do from my side , in terms of my donation to HHCU monthly and then challenge all Trainers to do the same, which I have done on this thread.
If you sponsor a race that's great. So many don't bother, so we'll done to you. The Operators and the trust do donate to HHCU. That's also great.
But, if a few more individuals who claim to love horses just gave a little each month, that would be greater. ..that's all I am trying to achieve - some more dearly needed funds.

On the basis that every racehorse is theoretically destined to retire (some are obviously deceased) ,it would make sense that some sort of levy should be taken at all points of registration and "donated" to horse care (I'm sure a suitable way of distribution could be worked out)
That would at least ensure a stable financial base to work from, and fundraising could be done on top of that!

Oscar problem with trainers is most of them are chasing their tails collecting bad debts from their owners.
Also the latest thing seems to be to try and get yourself a few Rand back on retiring a horse, many times recently ive been asked to take cheap shares in horses that have come with " we can get 20 k back as a jumper" when we retire

We DO get support from the racing industry, as well as some overseas equine charities, but we still have to fundraise in order to make ends meet. We have tried very hard to push through the 'levy' Rob Faux, with little success.
The year before last, we very nearly went bankrupt as a result of confiscating emaciated horses from various stud farms. (67 horses) What few people realise is that we have to prove to the court that we have tried to educate and assist the owner. Only once that fails, and we have evidence to that effect, can we confiscate and lay charges. We have to keep these animals until the trial is finished, which is a huge expense for us - it can take up to 5 years to get a case to court. We now try NOT to confiscate and lay charges, but rather get the owner to dispose of the animals in a welfare-friendly way, or sign ownership of them over to the Unit. At all times, we keep the horses' best interests our priority.
