Colts by Fort Wood and Tiger Ridge shone on the first day of the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale on Thursday.
The first yearling to make headlines on day one of the sale was lot 32, a beautifully bred son of the ill-fated Storm Cat horse, Tiger Ridge.
Catalogued as lot 32, the colt, who has been named Raging Fire, was knocked down to Ian Van Schalkwyk for R450 000.
Consigned by Ambleway Thoroughbred Stables (as Agent), the bay was produced by the five time winning National Assembly mare Sister Nation, who also finished second in the Listed Flamboyant Stakes. This is the family of the ill-fated ARCSA Champion filly Star Effort.
Few sires have exerted more influence in South Africa in recent years than champion sire Fort Wood. The son of Sadler’s Wells, and sire of three sons named Horse Of The Year, is the sire of lot 86, a colt who was knocked down for R420 000 on day one.
The bay, named Benjan, is out of a winning Machiavellian mare, and hails from the same family as one of Fort Wood’s best sons, Elusive Fort.
The sale continues this evening, and will re-commence again at 12 pm on Friday. A full list of prices will be available after the sale.

Prices were up all round at the end of the first day of the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale.
The first day of trading ended with the aggregate up from R10.7 million in 2013 to R12.145 million, an increase of R13.5 percent.
The average rose by nearly 21%, jumping from R90 678 to R109 414 this year, while the sale’s median price was up an impressive 27% from R55 000 to R70 000 in 2014. Day one’s sales topper came in the form of lot 102, a magnificent Var colt who was consigned by the Gary Player Stud Farm (As Agent).
A full-brother to two top sprinters in the form of August Rush and Miss October, the sales topping colt, who was knocked down for an even R1 000 000, was purchased by prominent owner, Adriaan Van Vuuren.
TBA CEO Jan Naude was pleased with the outcome of the first day of the sale, commenting, ”Clearly the quality of this year’s sale was up on last year, as can be seen in the fact that the median was up by 27%. Well done to the Gary Player Stud Farm, who, acting as agent, consigned the sales’ topper. It was also pleasing that this year’s sales topper fetched so much more in 2014 than a year earlier. Well done to staunch TBA supporter Adriaan Van Vuuren who purchased the sales’ topping colt.”
A full list of the day's prices are available on line, and a list of statistics will be available at the end of the sale.
