MICHAEL CLOWER
Variety Club will take the easier option and run in the Gr3 $200 000 Burj Nahaar over a mile at Meydan on Saturday rather than go for the Jebel Hatta, a Group 1 over 200m further and worth 50% more.
This is Dubai’s Super Saturday when the horses traditionally go on trial for the big races on World Cup night, but connections of the dual South African Horse of the Year have already decided to give the world’s richest race a miss on March 29.
An upbeat Derek Brugman, racing manager for Markus Jooste, said yesterday: “The Burj Nahaar is better distance-suited for Variety Club and it will give us a an ideal good indication as to whether we go for the Gr2 Godolphin Mile or the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free over1 800m.
But the World Cup itself is definitely not on the cards.”
The Joey Ramsden-trained five-year-old really impressed racing professionals from all over the world when shrugging aside an eight-month absence, including quarantine in both Mauritius and Britain, to completely dominate the opposition in last month’s Gr3 Firebreak Stakes.
