......The head band is a necessary piece of equipment for fractious or moody horses....seems to help them at the starting stalls as it cuts the horse's upward peripheral vision and they are not freaked out by the top of the stalls or shadows cast by the stalls....however running into a strong head wind it is a mini parachute producing a bit of drag and pulls on the rest of the head gear which may cause discomfort or the moody horse to believe that something is amiss...:

Without Malice had to have one on or she would rear up in the pens and either fly jump or rear up and miss the kick. If you wanted aero dynamics then shave the horses hear and tape up the jockeys ears. Or if that does not work put blinkers on with a piece of wire and stick a carrot on the end so it tries harder. Ha ha

I was not for one moment suggesting or insinuating that there was anything untoward about the racing equipment used....but the way that Welwitcha was ridden ,,,,,,watch how the winner was placed and ridden and at one point I did not think that Velvet Image would get through the field because she was so well covered behind almost the entire field .....imo that is where Welwichia should have been.....the only way I was able to gauge the affect of the headwind was to look at the head band on Welwichia which clearly showed that she was exposed to the head wind and her cover was too thin also far too close to the pace.....Not ultimately talking from the pocket either as I backed the winner but expected the favourite to finish a lot closer .....3rd place would have done just nicely.....
These head bands and nose bands collectively know as shadow rolls are an integral piece of equipment and really required for certain functions and again are not questioning there use or misuse.....one other mare trained by George Scott also ran with this head gear and it was always very loose and bobbed up and down which at one time bothered me.....but she seemed totally un phased.....
Horse racing is an extremely technical and tactical game.... horses are not machines and are often quirky or plain down right moody so I limit wagering involvement in that there hardly any certainties..... however one of the many restrictions that limits me from owning and racing horses.... is the human element.....I cannot stand it when humans err and deviate from what works.... and what may not....:

Found a long priced winner The West is Wide
Why?
He had dropped 10 points after 2 good runs in Dbn
Thought that was enough to get into the placings so took win/place doubles with 4
horses and collected 1 win double and all the places
Not big money but welcome after a few poor weeks punting
So advice Dont give up
