I know we can`t expect to get a comment from a bookie but would be great if we would...

boys i support phumelela on these one. the bookies get every thing for next to nothing. they pay 6% of win bets if i am correct is all. they no contribute to nothing regarding racing. so if you compare before phumelela the average bookmaker he has two meetings in the week one wednesday one saturday. today he have meetings every day. and he have meeting from all over the place. without tellytrack what does he have? he has the blower. no. i am sorry to me the bookies make there own shit with the open bet. well done phumelela make these boys pay.

With you on this one Flash. If I remember correctly even Betfair pays a percentage to P for offering bets on SA racing.
Just wish the operators would up their service, info, PR etc.

"they pay 6% of win bets" - that tax I think goes to government not racing.

How will a small bookie turning over 500k gross ever be able to afford to pay 15k?

my under stand is the bookie pay 3% for government and 3% go to the operator. can some one confirm or correct please.
bloodshot just the question re. who pay for the upkeep of the facilities? who pay the staff who do this? who arrange the racing schedule? who manage the day to day run of the horse business? and how do they get pay?
im sorry. is no personal but what the bookie give back is the joke when you compare to the tote. is no secret the place WITHOUT the bookies is the prosperus one. hong kong france singapore. is not a question is the fact.

The costs will just be transferred to us the punter.
And why should I, as a punter, have to pay indirect costs for extra tellytrack when I am already paying R600+ per month to watch it at home?

Flash - You are correct. Of each 6% deducted from winning bets 3% goes to the operator and 3% to the province. So contrary to current understanding they contribute 3% of all winning bets to the 'game'. Unlike the tote which confiscates a massive portion of your STAKE (whether you win or lose) before the wager even reaches the pool.
Definitions? - I believe their definition of 'Commercial Users' may be flawed. For example - I know of three bookmakers who do NOT operate retail outlets and allow no access from the public other than by phone and ( I assume ) from 'online' sources. If I understand their wording correctly these bookmakers should not be affected. This ruling could well have some bookmakers closing their 'retail' sections. But don't quote me - I know as much or as little as any of us do.
I am also a little concerned by the impact on sports bars and pubs as they appear to be affected by the wording as I understand it. Surely it will be easier for them to simply disconnect from Tellytrack? No real loss for them as most patrons prefer sport anyway.
What seems to entirely escape the operators is the following : They own ONLY the environment and NOT the participants ( ie the horses). The purpose of Tellytrack is to encourage people to bet -preferably on the Tote. At which point they are royally screwed for the privilege. What would happen if owners grouped together and demanded appearance money for ALL runners if such runners were flighted on Tellytrack? Hmmmmm.
Assuming that a number of 'retail outlets' decide to switch off the picture will this not have the effect of further curtailing interest in racing due to loss of the visuals?

IGN was started all those years back to improve the product and make racing accessible to a wider audience. The courses were empty and needed some lateral thinking. A small group of core guys came together and made IGN happen. We were a test customer right at the beginning and everyone loved it. The fact that you could only see the races was fine by us with some scrolling data screens from the tote as back up. Nobody cared, it was just amazing to see the horses running on TV. So convenient.
Problem is that Phumelela has created a major cost center in Tellytrack with all its pomp and sparkle and payouts and winning ways and follow the leader and big ben, racing international and little harry and whatever else is out there. All of this costs Phumelela money. Now they need to offset the costs somehow AND kill the open bet all in one foul swoop............
Bring back IGN, take away all the presenters and just switch between meetings with commentary.
As I understand it the bookies ALREADY pay for their privilege to show the races....problem is that they weren't paying Phumelela.....that, was unacceptable obviously.
Interesting times await.
BTW: Flash, I agree that bookies should contribute to racing, you are absolutely right. Why doesn't Phumelela then put 2% of the 3% into a special racing fund that can help with stakes or help with remodels or help with whatever so racing can benefit......
Do you really think this is going to happen with the 3%?

garrick is make fantastic point about the owners and who actually own the "product". i am sure phumelela will say these owners they race for the stakes that the operator provide? also i no sure but think this will be cover under the conditions of nominate/accept for the race on offer? is only logic i am no sure about facts just the speculate boys. it will also be good to see where does the 3% go when it is paid as tommy say? if it go straight to share holder then is benefit no body but the top boys. if it go to improve tellytrack or please god to pay for dedicate channel then make perfect sense no?
