Scottsville Hurdle Races

These races were held (I think annually) at Scottsville for a few years starting in about 1971 however field sizes dwindled and eventually the idea was abandoned. The 1971 field was a pretty good field with Cuff Link (participated in the July - not sure what year) Golden Jewel and Poplin being very good stayers in their day. The trainers of the horses makes for interesting reading as well with George Azzie, Aubrey Roberts and Brian Cunningham all having runners. Of the jockeys I am sure that D Sylvester was Dave Sylvester who was an assistant trainer to I think Brian Cunningham at some stage. The trainer / jockey T Augoustides I think was a relative of the trainer Johnny Scoulelis. M Mannion I think was Malcolm Mannion - a friend of David Payne. I wonder if the A Gordon is possibly the trainer of today?

These hurdle races were held at Scottsville commencing 1971 but were scrapped after about 5 years due to dwindling field sizes. The 1971 race was contested by Cuff Link (who was a participant in the July I think in 1969) as well as Golden Jewel (7th in the 1970 July) and the winner Poplin 15th of 16 in the 1970 July) who was an out and out stayer with the 2200m July being way too short for Poplin. The trainers and jockeys in the race make for some interesting reading as does Duffs highlights of the day.

Cuff Link won the Summer Handicap (or whatever it was called then - it's changed its name several times) back in the mid-sixties. Two other names are familiar - Java Sands in the Hurdle race is one but I can no longer remember what he did or why he should be familiar. Perhaps he ran in the July? The other is in the first race of the day, a maiden juvenile over 1000 m - is that THE Sentinel in the list of runners?
