I find it incredible how quick people are to give up on local horses.
It's almost to the same degree that Garrick refers to above where folks back a horse just because it's local.
Oh, and it's not a South African thing either. Everybody does it, and not just with horse racing.

How many times must South African bred horses win Gr1 races all over the world for us to accept that they are good enough?

You could say that The Apache has improved by lengths but the reality is that he was rated 115 on arrival in Dubai and is a 117 now. Igugu has run below her best and the reasons have been there for all to see.

Expectations seem to be too high most of the time.
They can't win every race, as much as we might like them to.
Let's look at River Jetez since she was brought up earlier.

In South Africa, she ran a bunch of11 gr1's, some of them age/sex restricted.
She finished 4th, 4th, 4th, 9th, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 8th, 3rd, 1st, 6th.
Based on that, she must go abroad and win gr1's or be labelled not good enough?
Her gr1 form abroad was 2nd (Dubai), 6th (Hong Kong), 2nd (Singapore), 5th (England), 3rd (USA), 8th (Dubai).
Looks like she ran to form to me, hardly finding the superior quality opposition more difficult to compete against.
By the way, she left South Africa as a 107, and peaked as a 116 with her close second to Gitano Hernando in Singapore.

Let her prove it on WC night. I have never been an Igugu fan but I none the less hope she runs to the standard everyone here has set for her!

All the best to the connections!
