.....now imagine this little scenario......how to middle the bookie.....a big punter with pull at Saftote or TAB that can cancel bets when ever....
places a huge place bet on a fav on the Island.....then phones his bookie to place a similar sized bet at tote odds.....bookie looks at the tote monitor and sees that horse is paying R1.10 a drum.....accepts the bet.....punter cancels tote bet at the off.....bookie left holding the bag for a 28/10(win) horse paying R6.40 the drum.....bookie gets wise.....he don't need a punter and has the tote terminal on his floor....places huge bets on the tote..... his customers come to him to get better odds and now take fixed places.....he cancels 80% of his tote bet and the 11/10(win) horse pays R4.20 a drum.....he pays his punters from his tote winnings......::o

With limits in place very hard to catch a bookmaker unless you wager your bet with multiple bookmakers. When you say above average player how much is he wagering ? cos the pools for international pools are not that huge and surely if he has taken it numerous times pool limits will come into effect. I for one always check the pool and how much a particular bet is paying before spreading the bet with different online bookmakers to "get on so to say". I only play the PA and Jackpot in international racing with bookmakers cos if you do catch the bet numerous times the Payout will still be quite good.

The open bet is illegal in the UK and should be here.

Yes Hibernia, but that's because the Tote in the UK is pathetic - when I lived there and asked once for a boxed trifecta (tricast) I was met with a blank look. It's probably improved a bit since then but is still decades behind the world's best Totes.

So what you are saying is that the operators must put on the show by funding racecourses, training centres, organising the races, TV coverage, the vast majority of stakes etc and still compete at a service level on their off course premises with the personal business of a bookmaker (some of whom compound the problem further by laying the open bet)?

Yes the customer is "King" in any game or service and is sadly lacking in SA.
