Richie it means when a horse is backed to win the maximum. At the bigger centers a claim are for R25,000 on raced horses and R10,000. so if a horse is at 5/1 the maximum you can bet is 25000/5000 then the horse will be "claimed" and probably shortewn to around 7/2. Hope this helps.

Hmmm, begrudging well done frodo... cost me a small fortune with Pres Elect... had 3rd and 4th in that order for the tricast too, was more than a little p*ssed as I liked hells but thinking it was the inside track I left it out :?

That is correct. I'm not sure what it's purpose is anymore these days, but it comes from a time when a number of bookies would operate from a single office then a punter could walk in and claim the odds, meaning all the bookies had to offer him a bet to max liability if asked. If you couldn't claim the odds the first bookie would take the hit and the others would immediately shorten the odds. With a claim the bookies had to offer you max bet on the odds when the claim was made.
