You will probably get a lot of different views on this - there is no hard and fast rule.
From my personal perspective - horses don't know what they cost - there are many examples of 'cheapies' making it big - Jet Master, Pierre Jourdan, JJ - just the other day, Dom Zaki I think mentioned that 'they' paid R60k for 10 horses - one of them being Valberg if I'm not mistaken
If you buy one sales topper and it flops, you leave a big hole in your pocket, but it you buy a cheapie and if flops, you can get another - that is not to say that you buy the first horse you lay your eyes on - I'm not sure how much you know about conformation, but I myself like to get an independant opinion of and 'expert' (trainer, horseman, etc) to check out my fancies - you will get many diverse opinions - but at least you can be relatively sure that the horse has at least a chance to see the race track - although JJ's legs were so bad that most 'astute' buyers did not want him.....
So make a list of horses you 'like' from the catologue (assuming you are buying off a sale), get somebody who knows their breeding (I believe Muhtiman is not bad
and check out the Sporting Post stats and summaries) - again you will get many varied opinions - get someone to go with you and check them out 'in the flesh', set your price, and there you go.
Partnerships much more affordable, but imo go in with your mates or colleagues - going in 'blind' with people you have never met can be risky :
And then you will need some luck.......
All the best (tu)

Do it for the love, it's a bit like meatloafs underware.
On the front it says "I would do anything for love"
On the back it says " but I won't do that"
Plus I have Greek partners lol
When you lead a winner into the number one box, no better feeling, but can cost a few rand getting there.
Enjoy!

Owning 20% shares in horses that fall into the 60k - 175k bracket works well.
Build a relationship with a trainer, don't worry to much about who the partners are.
Choosing the right trainer for your needs and budget is very important.

Hi guys
Hope all of you are well.
Unfortunately all gambling sites at my work have been blocked, and I have thus become a weeeknd punter these days. The problem is that on a Saturday I play all the way from Champ de Mars to Wolves/Parx, which can get expensive lol.
I have also recently bought a share in a horse trained by Bart Rice. It is very exciting indeed to call oneself an owner, and I hope this one does well.
Cheers,
MMF

Hey Greg...I see you're still in hot punting form these days. Are you only punting, or do you still own some pony shares?
Yes, the fact that the sites are blocked is upsetting to me. So much so that I am thinking of even quitting my job lol...

Richie77, what Frodo says makes a lot of sence..... i prefer to go into a partnership & spend say 50 - 100 G MAX, you might have 20, 25 % whatever. if it's a dud, your losses are minimal.
all my purchases in last 10 years have been 50 - 100 G...( TOTAL COST OF THE HORSE )..... EXCEPT 1........he was an IMPORT, COSTAPLENTY - 500 G EXACTLY, I only had a " small " share fortunately.............. HE WON HIS 1ST START, ( unexpectedly I think - he was just supposed to " see " the course )............................. HE NEVER WON AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!! His winning stake was 36 G, if we got back 50G in total that was a lot. in the end we GAVE HIM AWAY - FREE
go small at first, have fun, get partners involved.......... build up slowly as the bug bites you.
In my heyday I had shares in 8 horses........today down to ONLY TWO............... but still having fun & IT'S NOTA COSTING PLENTY ! haha
Frodo you better be right with that new baby, or your reputation is on the line. ( by the way, every horse, I've had a share with Frodo has at least won 1 x race.)
