If I could only get a discount for removing shows like Isidingo from my bouquet...

At first glance DSTV appears to be getting expensive. But as an option for a family it has no peer although it is not quite as attractive for singles.
Now let's do a 'entertainment comparison' using a visit to the movies as our example :
1.) You live 10k from the nearest movie house so let's assume you consume 2 litres of fuel getting there and back. ( If you can only face the journey in a Chelsea Tractor ( SUV ) then the consumption may be higher! )
Travel costs ( excluding wear and tear ) - R 24
2.) You are probably going to end up in a mall where parking is seldom free. After hours there is ( hopefully ) a flat rate :
Parking costs - R 10 ( hopefully! )
or
Parking 'Tax' ( car guard ) R 5 + depending upon your mood.
3.) Ticket prices
These can vary substantially dependent upon what you are going to see but let's average them at R50
2x R50 = R 100.
4.) Refreshments
Two Coke/Popcorn combos
Approximately R 75
You will then end up in a theatre where the people behind you talk incessantly and everyone else spends more time sending and receiving texts than watching the movie.
It makes Box Office - where the movies are pretty much 'current' - seem like a bargain @ R25 a throw!
With respect - it's the best bang for your entertainment buck around. And once you discipline yourself to run a day or two in arrears with your viewing you can watch all of your favourite shows and series on DSTV On Demand without having to plow ( or fast forward ) through the ads. So you can watch three 1 hour shows in 2 hours as the content length is only about 40 minutes per show.
The only thing that amuses me about DSTV is that, like Tellytrack, they love to advertise to the converted.
Criticism ? - I would like to see the additional levy for HD removed.

I broke down and went and had my PVR decoder manually loaded with the nessisary software upgrades after experiencing highly fustrating problems that DSTV failed to give any notice or warnings on. The service was quick and effiecient but totally worthwhile but could have been avoided if addressed or notified correctly. I visited my brother-in-law 2 weeks ago and he was still in the dark about what had transpired with regard to the software problems and thought that the PVR had been damaged and was about to shell out to buy a new one.
This DSTV on demand or "catch up" as they call it, is brilliant, yet the programing is never constant and DSTV don't seem to care a hoot....we have had to now PVR all our favorite shows and series for fear that it is not going to be on the catch up channel/feature.....the resulting problems are that we have now screwed up 3 remote controls(the FF toggle broke on all) in attempts to FF through the lengthy ads.....could DSTV be in this instance paying lip service to adverizers by not placing certain shows on catch up as they have regulary done in the past.....also no sport has been on catch up for some time now....great watching a condensed 6min game while having a cup of morning coffee before getting the news on SABC2 2 days later.

Keep them this is a cash cow. Telkom will fail very shortly and good chance Multichoice tie up a Chinese deal shortly.
Collect your divvies every year and let that pay your DSTV subs.
