Normally, I would say, 7 out of 10, when a newcomer is backed, it's by the stable or the owners,etc... because they saw some potential in the animal. They normally finish 1 2 or 3. They normally inform the on-course representatives of their 'feelings' about the baby and the betting speaks for itself.
But when you have a baby running for the first time & another the 2nd time and you (the trainer tells the on course-presenter that you are confident with the baby running the 2nd time) and it is the tote fav and runs no-where, but the the other 1 @ 40/1 or whatever wins ........does not make sense.....
Could he not see that Kleintjie had potential??????? or as Magic said, Kleintjie het alles vandag kom wys by die 'track'
Sorry, but I don't agree
I love horses, but this is a game for kings and.........

No doubt, but it seems to be happening more with certain stables than others - just my opinion

It is also normally the only time an owner "owns" the price of his horse which is his prerogative - thereafter the formbook dictates and we can all make up or minds

Ah, the old owner's prerogative story again. We won't go into that again now, but it's not much of a prerogative if a horse shows zilch at home and then turns into a rocket on the racecourse. It happens. There was an instance many years ago when an unfancied first timer won a race at either Kenilworth or Milnerton beating into second a much more fancied horse owned by the same owner (but with a different trainer). The trainer of the winner apologised to the owner, saying he simply he had no idea his filly was than good because she'd shown nothing like it at home.
The winner went on to be probably the best 2yo filly in Cape Town that season, the favourite (which the owner had a big bet on) I think won one race. No names (although the owner and one of the two trainers involved are deceased), but the other is still training in Cape Town and might still be a bit bemused by how his moderate duckling at home turned into a swan on the racecourse.
Now I have no idea whether Kleintjie ever showed a thing at home or not, but it's worth remembering that Mother Russia and Gypsy's Warning both won at massive odds first time out (within a few weeks of each other) and look at how they turned out...!

It also bears noting that some trainers "stomp" their babies more than others. Yes, some will still appear to show more ability than the rest even with a relatively soft training regime, but there's nothing soft about racing (especially in a flat out sprint) and that's why we always say that racing and working are often two entirely different things.
Furthermore, if they'd "pulled a job" with any of these big priced debut winners do you think they would have started at those odds?? Especially in SA, where it takes about fifty cents to shorten a first timer.
