there is definetly something suspicious about arlington park dividends/shows i placed a bet on jump in 4th race and tote was showing 11 dr carina R2 at jump and when race closed however paid R1.60 .I put that down to possible late money and our tote not fast enough to adjust however race 9 payouts and shows makes one think!!!!what chance the tote responds to these questions 10/1 offered no reponse .

i think a basic maths is used.

see below perfect world all horses same value.

win value easy 1/14

Place pool 1/14 divided by 3

as long as u have 14k you can only split to 100%

Gross vs nett would make no difference to suggested payout.

only way they get new values are to add money to the pool remove horse or add more place numbers

win pool pool% place pool pool%
1 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
2 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
3 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
4 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
5 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
6 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
7 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
8 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
9 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
10 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%

11 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
12 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
13 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
14 14 1000 7.14% 4.67 1000 7.14%
14000 14000

Scotia, nothing wrong with your logic there. What you've described is how we calculate the prices in South Africa.
Using your example, and ignoring tote takeout, the odds would be:

horse 1 has 50,000 (100000/3=33333/50000=0.67)
horse 2 has 30,000 (100000/3=33333/30000=1.11)
horse 3 has 10,000 (100000/3=33333/10000=3.33)
horse 4 has 5,000 (100000/3=33333/5000=6.67)
horse 5 has 5,000 (100000/3=33333/5000=6.67)

No problem there. That's how we all understand it.

However, from what I read on sites explaining how the US does it, it is different.

They take the pool and subtract the amount bet on the 3 placed horses to calculate the 'profit'. This profit is split 3 ways.
So, if horses 1,2 and 5 place:
100000 - (50000+30000+5000)=15000 profit/3 = 5000 per place position.
Horse 1 pays 5000/50000=0.10+1=1.10
Horse 2 pays 5000/30000=0.17+1=1.17
Horse 5 pays 5000/5000=1.00+1=2.00

However, if horses 3,4 and 5 place:
100000 - (10000+5000+5000)=80000 profit/3 = 26667 per place position.
Horse 3 pays 26667/10000=2.67+1=3.67
Horse 4 pays 26667/5000=5.33+1=6.67
Horse 5 pays 26667/5000=5.33+1=6.67

Look at the difference. If the two favourites place, horse 5 pays 2.00. If the two favourites are unplaced, horse 5 pays 6.67.

thanks for the extra maths lesson but bottom line tote was showing betting to 265 percent and that is impossible and misleading to the punter!!
