Too many bloody 'muggies' around - my partner also lost two unraced juveniles on his smallholding in Randjies - few others are sick, but seem to be responding to treatment

Horse sickness comes in a good few strains - about 17, but I stand to be corrected.
Every year, Onderstepoort needs to decide what strains to omit from the vaccinations, as we cannot cover all of them. So, it's often one of these omitted strains that pops up. At the same time, it usually starts with an unvaccinated horse.
The 'not contagious strain' does not exist - Encephalosis has VERY similar symptoms, and ultimatly a blood sample will need to be sent to Onderstepoort to discern between AHS and Encephalosis.
Encephalosis does know the wind out of their sails, but only has a mortality rate of around 5%, compared to AHS which is closer to 90%.
So, if a horse has the "not contagious strain", it is in all likelihood Encephalosis.
Hoping this gets under control soon - usually the first cold snap will kill off most of the 'muggies' around, so hoping for that really soon
