Dubai World Cup
1 year 2 months ago
“It’s magical!” Baffert Targets Fifth Dubai World Cup“They’re taking off right now, how about that?!”Bob Baffert is in relaxed mood in California as two of his horses speed down the runway, about to launch for Dubai. Newgate heads for the $12million Dubai World Cup and Hopkins for the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen.Despite success in the desert which has seen him win four Dubai World Cups so far, Baffert won’t be joining his horses on the trip.“I love Dubai, I’d love to go but I’m shorthanded an assistant right now, so Jimmy [Barnes] is going, he’ll be there at the weekend, along with a rider and a groom.”Barnes was also at the helm when Country Grammer won Baffert his most recent Dubai World Cup, in 2022. This time he takes charge of Newgate, who returns to action less than a month after winning the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 3rd.“With Newgate I know I’m kind of back a little quick, but he’s a really hardy horse who carries a lot of flesh,” says Baffert. “He’s doing better now than he was going into the Big Cap when he was a little heavy. I really think he’s doing well.”Newgate will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, who combined with Baffert on Country Grammer and who also has three other Dubai World Cups on his resume.“The thing about Frankie Dettori is the great riders don’t need any instructions,” continues Baffert. “When the gate opens, they figure it out. The last thing on my mind is worrying about Frankie and what he’s going to do on the horse. My job is to make sure that the horse shows up.”Baffert is under no illusions as to the strength of the $12million dollar race, which features defending champion Ushba Tesoro as well as Laurel River, who he trained to win the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar, before the six-year-old moved to Bhupat Seemar in Dubai.“I’m running against one of my old horses [Laurel River]. He’s a really talented horse; a top calibre horse. They can all stay if they don’t go too fast early on.”Is there any similarity between Newgate and Baffert’s four winners of the race? The answer is emphatic.“Totally different. My other winners were in top form, coming off big races. Country Grammer was coming off a long layoff, ran in Saudi and he was just a true mile and a quarter horse. The ride that Frankie gave him was unbelievable. He beat Life Is Good who was a great horse but the distance got him a little bit.“Arrogate was one of the greatest performances of any racehorses that I’ve ever trained - he was incredible. To me, it was like a Secretariat-like performance. What he did that night; not breaking, being last, coming around… Gun Runner was a great horse and he just catches him like it was an exercise gallop.“Winning the first time with Silver Charm was just really exciting. It’s the only race that you lead your horse up there and you go ‘I think he’s doing well but I really don’t know. I hope he handles everything.’“I remember Captain Steve; he was normally on the lead but he was four lengths off it and I thought ‘maybe he's not running’ and then he came up and won it. It’s magical, it’s a challenge and I love challenges, but if you have a good horse and he’s ready, you can win it.”Baffert also has a Dubai Golden Shaheen on his roll of honour, having won the $2million sprint with Secret Circle in 2015. His runner this year, Hopkins, was fourth to the re-opposing Sibelius 12 months ago.“Hopkins ran well last year and I think he’s doing better this year,” says Baffert. “He always shows up; he’s big strong horse. I had him and another horse but I decided to go with him because he’s doing so well right now. When you go halfway across the world you have to make sure your horse is in top form because it’s a tough ship.”Missing out on Dubai, where will he watch the action? Over a relaxed lunch with friends, perhaps? Not the case.“I usually watch it in my barn at Santa Anita with all the grooms; we all huddle up to watch. It’s exciting when they run well. To win the Dubai World Cup, it’s just a thrill.”Baffert’s love of Dubai is rooted in genuine emotion, understandably so.“ Dubai – everytime I go, it changes. It’s so much fun - I’ve gone snow skiing there! It’s a working vacation. “I have great memories because I had a heart attack there and Sheikh Mohammed [bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai] saved me. I have so much respect for Sheikh Mohammed and his family – he’s such a visionary guy and has been really good for American racing.“I got a second chance; he sent a top guy [doctor] in there and he fixed me. There wouldn’t have been any Triple Crowns if he hadn’t saved me.”

“She’s got a bit of sass!” Frost At Dawn aims to give Knight first G1“She’s pretty fresh!” is virtually the first thing William Knight says when talking about his G1 Al Quoz Sprint contender, Frost At Dawn. “Bucking seems to be her new party trick!”When they’re good, you can forgive them a bit of ‘sass,’ as Knight puts it. With five runs in little under four months, culminating in G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint success, Frost At Dawn has proved to be tough as well as good. Now she goes for Group 1 glory, taking on an international bunch of rivals in the 1200metre turf sprint on Dubai World Cup day, March 30th.Abdulla Al Mansoori’s iron grey filly has been a revelation since travelling to Dubai in late December, something which wasn’t part of Knight’s original plan.“My thinking was that after she’d won at Chelmsford, I could put her away for the year for a Guineas trial [in the UK]. But I felt she’d be better suited to the fast ground, plus she’s Dubai-owned. I also thought because of her American pedigree, by Frosted out of a War Front mare, there was an angle on the dirt, so that’s where we started off in December.“After her first run, which was very good, my plan was to end up in the [Jumeirah Fillies’] Guineas on the turf. But then we went a mile with her on the dirt when they went too fast, all fell in a heap and she didn’t get home, so it was a recovery mission after that. Then she ran well over seven furlongs [1400metres] on the turf and showed a lot of speed.”It was multiple Group 1-winning jockey Jim Crowley who first planted the idea of the Al Quoz Sprint, after he finished third on Frost At Dawn in the Jumeriah Fillies’ Classic.“Then we dropped back to six furlongs [1200metres] against three-year-olds and she showed a lot of speed and confirmed to us that she’s a six-furlong horse. Jim got off and said: ‘what about the Al Quoz Sprint for her?’ Then we looked to Super Saturday and the only race for her was over five [furlongs, 1000metres].”The rest is history; Frost At Dawn and Mickael Barzalona charged along the far rail, beating 14 rivals and breaking the track record.“Had we not gone to Dubai I probably would have chased the Guineas dream and got to June running her over the wrong trip!” laughs Knight, who is based in Lambourn in the UK. “Now we will train her as a five/six-furlong horse.”Knight gives plenty of credit to amateur jockey Abbie Pierce, who has looked after Frost At Dawn in Dubai and – so far – managed to sit all the bucks.“Abbie has done a fantastic job. Frost At Dawn has thrived since she’s been there. When you send a horse abroad, they’ve got to have that constitution and she takes her races very well, eats up clean. She’s matured too – every time I put a saddle on her I think she looks stronger and more like a sprinter.”Knight has had horses placed in Group 1s before but is yet to win one.“Sir Busker was third… Checkandchallenge was fourth… we’ve gone well in Group 1s, but to go into one with a real chance is quite exciting,” he says. “Her win on Super Saturday was no fluke and that she broke the track record gives me a bit of confidence. Mickael [Barzalona] is going to ride her, which is great, as they obviously got on well.“If you’d in said December that I’ll be running on Dubai World Cup night I’d think ‘don’t be so ridiculous!’”

Lord North 'in good order' for Dubai Turf four-timer
Lord North is firmly on course to bid for a fourth Dubai Turf victory
The eight-year-old has won the nine-furlong Group One on Dubai World Cup night in each of the past three years under Frankie Dettori, with outright triumphs in 2021 and 2023 sandwiching a dead-heat finish with Japan’s Panthalassa.

Big day has arrived
I expect Saudi Crown to win the opener to give me some cash for a few very difficult exotics
Only banker is Forever Young
Liberty Island was beaten by Equinox but so was everything else and Auguste Rodin can give it a race, a rather sick Molly told me to include Junko ?
Good Punting 👍
